Aluminium oxide is a white solid, a compound of aluminum and oxygen, and its molecular formula is Al2O3. It is also called bauxite in mining, ceramics and material science. Common purity is 99.5% and 96%.

Aluminium oxide is a white solid, a compound of aluminum and oxygen, and its molecular formula is Al2O3. It is also called bauxite in mining, ceramics and material science. Common purity is 99.5% and 96%.
Alumina is the reason why metal aluminum is not easily corroded in the air. Pure metallic aluminum easily reacts with oxygen in the air to form a thin aluminum oxide film covering the aluminum surface exposed to the air. This aluminum oxide film can prevent aluminum from being oxidized further. The thickness and properties of this oxide film can be enhanced by a process called anodic treatment (anodic corrosion protection).
Application:
1.Alumina is an insulator of electricity and heat.
2.The crystal form of alumina corundum is suitable for abrasive materials and cutting tools because of its high hardness.
3.Alumina crystals can also be used as substrates for epitaxy.
4.Alumina powder is often used as a medium for chromatography.
5.It can be used as an emergency brake device for high-speed railway trains (spray alumina powder on the rail to increase the friction of the rail) , 
6. Alumina is the main components of refractory bricks .
7.The main components of ruby and sapphire are alumina, which exhibit different colors due to other impurities. Ruby contains chromium oxide and it is red, while sapphire contains iron oxide and titanium dioxide and it is blue.
